"Here’s a million-dollar idea: why not release a set of customisable CGI characters and settings, combined with an interface that lets users control the lighting, shutter speed and camera position, and maybe even something approximating lip-synch?"

Um, because making soimething do bizarre things that were never really intended is part of the fun?

I actually checked out the videos on the channel Gary links to, and I have to saym they're pretty impressive. Take this, for example. A full animatic put together in 2 days? Wow. I got so fixated on the idea of putting a tool like this in the hands of amateurs it never occurred to me that there would be some very real industry applications as well -- like blocking effects shots, or even previewing simple blocking.

"Here’s a million-dollar idea: why not release a set of customisable CGI characters and settings, combined with an interface that lets users control the lighting, shutter speed and camera position, and maybe even something approximating lip-synch?..."

Well, let's hope you're right about the million dollar part, as that's exactly what we've been working on at Antics! Antics 3D is a real-time animation tool that's used in previz, storyboards, machinima, in fact by anyone with a story to tell.

It's free of the limitations set by the various game engines, and allows you to create a set, drop in content and characters, then just point and click to have them act out your scene. Drop in some cameras, chose your lenses, add audio, lip synching and much more. Then you record all this in a timeline and save out your final movie. You can even browse the thousands of free models on Google 3D Warehouse and drop them straight into your scene.

It sounds like Antics is exactly what you're looking for. It's available as a free download, not time limited or restricted in any way, from www.antics3d.com

Check out some of the movies created with Antics on youtube.com/antics3d

If you do give it a try we would love to hear what you think. Please feel free to post your thoughts up on our forum.

Enjoy!
